Anyone can snap a pic and throw it on social media. But what makes an image stand out and cut through the noise? The content creator competition is fierce guys and it can be an intimidating field to step into.
I’m sharing my tips to creating great images whether you are using a DSLR or smartphone!
Intent:
Why are you taking this photo, what are you trying to highlight and how does it reflect your brand or the brand you are building. Answering these simple questions will help you narrow down the type of images you need and want to create and help you with choosing a location. Going deeper you need to ask yourself what the story is behind the image and how does it connect to the underlying story of your brand.
Composition/ Lighting:
Will make or break your image. Some people just have a natural eye for good composition. This means paying attention to spacial awareness around the subject you are shooting, making sure you are capturing them in a way that is flattering for them in relation to the background. Lighting is crucial. When shooting outside it is always changing. When you understand lighting you can play around with it much more and get really creative. To start out I suggest shooting either around sunrise or sunset. If you must shoot in the middle of the day the best lighting will be in a shaded area or when it is overcast.
Mood-boarding:
Creating collages of inspiration is a must. From a layout your might like, an outfit, a location or the way the subject is positioned you find out a lot about yourself and the content you are trying to create when you mood-board. I either save images to folders on my Instagram or pin on Pinterest. Then I can easily refer back to the images when I’m shooting. Maybe see if a pose works or the composition of a certain shot.
Post-production:
My secret tool, that’s not so secret. Every influencer that I admire uses a form Lightroom edits to keep their look cohesive. I developed my own and ever since I began to implement them they have totally enhanced the look of my content. I use the Lightroom Mobile app when I’m editing on the go. Even when I shoot on my iPhone I am still able to make those images blend into my content because my custom filters maintain the look of my brand.
