My Favorite Workouts (in Houston)

There are so many different workouts, class styles, apps etc out there it can be hard to find which workout is right for you. I know that with my years of dance there are few types or workouts I can get into and feel really great about. While I do enjoy doing light free weights at the gym motivation for a solo workout can be hard to find!

Today I am sharing my tried and true workouts (and one brand new one) that have kept me in shape for my whole life.

Ballet Class (Houston Ballet Open Adult Classes). No other workout for me compares to a great ballet class. Not only am I toning, tightening, developing strength and flexibility while working on artistry, it is the most entertaining and fulfilling “workout” and the post endorphins are incomparable! I get such a great high from a dance related workout. If an open ballet class is WAY intimidating try a group fitness dance class, or hip hop class. Remember these classes are what you make of them, like in all things you have to work hard to reap the rewards.!

Hot Yoga (Equinox) I love getting my muscles warm and sweating out toxins. I have to be careful not to over-stretch or overdo it. Hot yoga is not for all, bring lots of water and don’t feel you have to do everything. I often take breaks, go slower than the teacher etc.

Megaformer Pilates (HIP Fitness) I have always disliked pilates, but always heard the BEST things about it.  HIP Fitness changed all that, I took one class two weeks ago and totally love it! You really feel all your muscles activating and working hard during the class and it is entertaining 45 minutes. They a guided small group workouts and once you get the hang of positioning on the machine it’s very fun!

Walk ( Memorial Park) sometimes a solid walk is the best thing you can do for yourself. You don’t need to be “killing it” every day. Your body needs a break and walking is a great fat burning and toning exercise that gets you out in the fresh air.

  • Side note: I never feel pressured or intimidated by the teacher or anyone in class to go beyond what I feel is safe for my body. Your teachers are there to guide you, motivate you and get you in the correct form but they don’t know what is going on inside of you. Sometimes you don’t have the time to tell them ahead of class if you are working with an injury etc.. know yourself, know your body and its limitations. As long as I am working hard where I am, I don’t feel a rush to hit the advanced yoga modification in class the first time it’s given. I prefer to ease into it and do it when my body is ready. Listen to your body and become increasingly aware of it.

There are so many fun types of classes out there, let me know your favorites!
